The time came to the step to actual freedom. The previous steps were a struggle to overcome a culture rooted in slavery; preliminary steps to purify and elevate the morality of masters, realize spiritual emancipation of slaves, and prepare a whole community with a history steeped in condoning, justifying, and practicing slavery, for its renaissance. Without these preparatory measures that paved the way for full freedom, the consequences would have been drastic. A sudden, reckless abolition of slavery would have only been followed by systematic discrimination and enforced segregation, which would have entrapped people into a worse evil – namely, racism – and plunged the nation into chaos.
