I bn `Umar (a Companion) narrated that the Prophet of Allah, sallallaa- hu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:
“A woman was punished in Hell because of a cat which she had confined until it died. She did not give it to eat or to drink when it was confined, nor did she free it so that it might eat the vermin of the earth.”1
An-Nawawi (an exegete of Prophetic narrations) said: “The narration is evidence that it is prohibited to kill cats and confine them without offering them food or drink.”2
